Gutshot, bellybuster and inside straight draw are all terms used to describe a hand in which the player is drawing at a single card rank to make a straight. By definition, this is at best a four-out draw (there might be fewer outs if one or more of the necessary cards is already dead). For . Schwartz Top Contributor: Philosophy. Verified Purchase. This is a wonderful caper novel. The past lover of the head of the Armenian mob in L.
The package is a woman in the trunk of the car he is provided; her name is Gina Clement and she is a real handful. Moby has contracted with Lexy the Armenian to find and transport Gina who was on the lam back to Vegas, where he will kill her, slowly.
A nasty and conniving bit of business himself, he is aided by a local antiquities dealer; Moby is aided by an enforcer with a pure heart and Lexy is aided by an enforcer who is completely heartless.
All of these individuals chase one another, chase the McGuffin and, in general, provide the reader with about hours of exceptional fun.
In short, this is prime crime fiction with beaucoup humor and non-explicit sex, horrific villains and flawed but loveable protagonists.
The plot is marvelous, the settings neat, the characters memorable. Highly recommended. LB is a major new voice in the world of crime fiction. I'd give this a five for pure pleasure, but to be fair it is not Moby Dick, or Huckleberry Finn, it's just one of the best crime novels written in recent years.
The book is a bit of a genre novel, but I'm not exactly sure just what genre. I see the comparisons to Hiaasen and Leonard, and that's fair enough.
Problem is, Hiaasen is great when he's good, but darned inconsistant. Leonard, well frankly I've always found Leonard to be very overrated--simply making all of your characters flawed does not make a great novel.
The author here manages to avoid cliches and kept me guessing. There was a lot of humor and the two main characters remained a match for each other which in and by itself was cool to read.
It's a caper, a getaway, a romance, misdirection, action and humor. The reason that I'm writing this review is that I came back to check if he'd written anything else.
Alas, no, and not likely too either. The author is a highly successful screenwriter which I understand is easy money if you have the knack.
He wrote this during the strike to make the payments on his Porsche or whatever. Even if this is the only one, the book is still very worth reading.
We learn that Duffy was a terrible husband who basically kept May in a cage and watched her constantly when he wasn't out drinking and making out with strippers.
He gives Jack a revolver, and Jack and Lewis tangle in a gritty fistfight while treacherous May observes the fisticuffs.
May gets the drop on Jack and she tries to kill him, but the gun backfires and blows her away. Paulie kills Lewis and they warn Jack to clear out of town.
As slickly done as the action is, nothing really happens in this pedestrian minute melodrama stocked with despicable characters. Jack finds himself in trouble for a murder that he didn't mean to commit, and he flees to his friends that he owes money and gets them to polish off the villain.
The action comes full circle. Although it contains polished production values, "Gutshot Straight" essentially qualifies as a potboiler.
Seagal fans won't like it that the paunchy Seagal has what amounts to a cameo. The DVD commentary is interesting and contains insights into the production.
This is a one-time watch it only movie. The eclectic team of stars populating this one is its most unique asset, while everything else is predictable and firmly in the B-grade of cinematic standing.
It's good for a lazy evening's repast, but it's got no hope of becoming anyone's new favorite. The story: A hapless gambler George Eads is drawn into a vicious setup that places his life at risk.
Despite most of the cast's affiliation with the action genre, there is very little action here, but at the best of times, there's a decent amount of intrigue.
Essentially, the plot boils down to a slain millionaire and a case of blackmail, and when the film kicks into gear, the angst experienced by the Eads character is palpable and compelling.
Disappointingly, suspense collapses in the form of Seagal's character, who's essentially written as a panacea to the lead character's problems and wrests an unconvincing happy end for the star.
Even before then, the film has trouble maintaining its level of suspense. Giving every impression of trying to stretch their screenplay to meet a required runtime, the filmmakers resort to several time-killing scenes — sometimes it's a forced interaction between characters, and other times it's simply Eads walking around aimlessly.
Speaking of which, it doesn't help the movie that the Eads character is a thoroughly unlikable and uninteresting jerk.
Most of the other major characters are at least mildly interesting, but whatever time Eads doesn't spend directly imperiled is spent being a cad and a loser.
The times that the film does get interesting are due to the hard work of the story, not of the protagonist. Among all of the performers whose name got drawn out of a hat to be in here, Seagal is the most curious.
It's almost as though his scenes were filmed for another movie, given the abrupt change of tone the film undergoes as soon as he shows up, playing the mafioso persona he's cultivated for the last several years.
I almost wish that Seagal were the main character, because even if this didn't actually improve the quality of the film, it at least would have made it shorter.
As is, it feels overlong at 85 minutes, and I cannot recommend it to anyone but George Eads die-hards. Thank goodness for Prime Amazon Video for showing these movies.
Better comedy than Monty Python Flying Circus. The acting is so awesome Awesome crap that you will spit up your beverage watching this trash.
Highly recommended if you like comedy of the absurd. Welcome to another Seagal trash feast. I don't think it's spoiler territory to reveal he said no!!

Close observers might note, however, that one of the possible tens the ten of clubs would cause the board to contain three clubs.
This could conceivably give someone else a flush, so only three of the available tens are considered pure outs.
This movie didn't interest me enough to continue watching it. I like George Eads when he played on CSI but this movie was slow and uninteresting from the beginning and didn't get any better 20 to 30 minutes later.
It may have gotten better further into the movie but it was just too dull for me to continue watching. Most importantly, this is not a Seagal and Vinnie movie.
They do little more than cameo appearances. Their parts are small but important to the story. I don't know George Eads, and without looking him up I don't recall any other movie he may have made but Stephen Lang is the star of this film.
The storyline could have been better for sure. There were a few things that just didn't make sense at all. But the film was smooth without having places to make you fall asleep.
This is definitely NOT a family movie because of the topless bar scenes, gambling night life, mobster style language.
It is not so good that I would have bought it if I had already saw it and it is not so bad that I will not watch it again. Since I have most of the movies the Steven Seagal has appeared in so I can add this to my collection making it at least See all reviews.
